Postpartum Care
Our postpartum care is different. While the standard of care in the United States is often simply a postpartum visit 6 weeks after giving birth, midwives know that families need much more.
At Columbia Birth Center, families have access to their team of midwives for routine postpartum care and breastfeeding support. Our midwives also provide well baby newborn care for the first 2 weeks of life.
We typically see families for a home visit 24-36 hours after birth and for clinic visits at 3-5 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks postpartum. If there are any concerns, additional visits can be scheduled.
Routine postpartum care includes:
Regularly scheduled clinic visits
Access to midwives 24/7 for emergencies, including ability to securely message providers in the portal for non-emergency questions or concerns
Lactation care (routine lactation care with trained midwives and access to IBCLC care, if needed)
Emotional assessments/screenings for perinatal mood disorders
Screening for diastasis recti and common pelvic floor concerns
Referrals to other specialists (pediatricians, pelvic floor physical therapists, infant feeding specialists, pediatric dentists, etc.)
Routine newborn screenings (hearing screening, critical congenital heart defect screening, and metabolic screenings)
Newborn weight checks
Referrals to community support, including new parent support groups that meet at Columbia Birth Center
